Where to Read Hunter x Hunter Officially (Free)

Both platforms are official, both are cheap, and both are better than any pirate aggregator in every way that matters (image quality, loading speed, supporting the author). But they're not identical, and after using both weekly for years, here's how I'd choose:

Use Manga Plus if: you're a lapsed reader catching up. The free model is generous — first 3 chapters of every arc and the latest chapters are always free, and the 401+ catch-up window lets you read the entire current phase at zero cost. The web reader works on any device with no account needed, which makes it perfect for that "I just heard a new chapter dropped" moment. The downside: once the catch-up window closes, middle chapters (roughly Ch. 4–400) go back behind a paywall or the read-once model, and the read-once mechanic means you can't easily re-read a chapter you skimmed too fast at 2 AM.

Use VIZ Shonen Jump if: you're reading the series properly from the start, or you follow more than one Jump series. For $2.99/month — less than a coffee — you unlock the entire HxH catalog plus One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, and the rest of the Jump library. If you're binge-reading the Chimera Ant arc (and you should, uninterrupted), the VIZ vault is simply the right tool: no read-once limits, clean panel-by-panel reading mode, and your progress syncs across app and web. Honestly, at $36 a year it's the best value in manga, full stop.

My actual setup: VIZ subscription for the back catalog and re-reads, Manga Plus web on Sunday mornings for the new chapter. Total cost per year: about one tankobon volume. If you've ever read this series on a pirate site with machine-translated dialogue, you know how much Nen rules and character intent get mangled — reading Togashi's actual dialogue is a materially different experience in this series specifically.

Short answer from someone who owns the run in both formats: the VIZ print volumes are excellent — good paper, faithful translation, and Togashi's art rewards print more than almost any other Jump series (the Succession War chapters especially, with their dense court-intrigue layouts). Two things worth knowing before you buy:

• Volume pacing: English volumes trail the Japanese release by roughly a year. Volume 38 covers up through the 2022 return chapters; the newest material (401+) will take a while to reach print. If you're current with the weekly chapters, digital is the only way to stay there.
• Where to buy: RightStuf/Amazon carry the full VIZ line, and any decent bookshop can order them. The series is 38+ volumes and counting — if you're collecting, budget slowly. The Chimera Ant arc (vols. 19–32) is the stretch every collector agrees is mandatory; the rest you can decide as you go.

One more collector's note: because of the hiatus years, some mid-run volumes went out of print periodically and spiked in price on resale markets. VIZ has been restocking consistently since the 2022 return, so don't panic-buy marked-up copies — check the official channels first.
